Outside Southern Cross Station

12:00pm – 1:00pm
Wednesday 11th May

The Wednesday Action Group has been holding peaceful gatherings every Wednesday around Melbourne directly raising issues with the public ranging from the independence of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, to laws that criminalise dissent, the need to hold a Royal Commission into corruption in Victoria, the establishment of a New People’s Bank, the need to establish a National Emergency Fund, the increasing destructive role monopolies play in Australia and a number of other important issues.

The main problem we have faced during the past eleven years is institutions reactions to our presence outside their offices. It is not unusual for private security guards to try to move us on and the police to become involved when we refuse to move. On each and every occasion we have stood our ground because we have been involved in peaceful activity utilising our rights as Australian citizens to use open public space to protest.

Our main concerns revolve around our ability to continue to freely use open public space to bring our ideas directly to the public. The ability to demonstrate in public spaces without asking for police or private permission to hold these demonstrations is a fundamental right that should be enjoyed by all citizens living in a democratic society.

The alienation of public spaces through governments entering into private public partnerships to manage what traditionally has been open public spaces has dramatically decreased the rights of Australian citizens to freely assemble and protest. Over the past decade we have been involved in conflicts with the Melbourne Federation Square Authority who, after a number of significant public protests, we have entered into an understanding with to hold protests when we like to the privately owned conglomerate that runs Southern Cross Station, the largest railway station in Victoria, that has continued to play hard ball about the issue with us. Matters have come to a head a number of times over the past four years. On every occasion significant numbers of police and private security guards have attempted to deny us our rights to use open public space outside Southern Cross Station.

Matters once again came to a head on Wednesday 16th February when police and private security guards attempted to restrict our activity to a 94cm strip of the footpath claiming once again that the rest of the footpath was no longer public land. Once again we stood our ground. We have made a decision to openly challenge the alienation of the open public space outside Southern Cross Station and on Wednesday 11th May 2011 from midday to 1:00pm we will be reclaiming privatised open public space irrespective of the authority’s attempts to stop us reclaiming this space. For this action to be successful we need your help.
Without your assistance the drive to alienate open public space will continue unabated. If we win this struggle the drive to privatise open public space will be halted.

Pass on this information to everybody you know. Encourage them to join us on the day, the only way we, like the people of Egypt, can succeed is by peacefully mobilising enough people on the day to demonstrate ultimate political authority rests in the hands of the people not the state or the government of the day.
